Your post was beautiful and reading it made my heart ache. I still miss New York City and it's been six years since I left. I have always felt that living in NYC was similar to being in love with a scoundrel. The romance is there, but it only makes you cry in the end.

What a beautiful post. It made my heart tighten up and get really small. My mother and I were talking about missing places and the past the other day. It made me think of something an old friend said once: "If you're ready to leave, you've been there too long." Interesting to think about; at least when one leaves somewhere and they are not fully ready, pleasant memories and the bittersweetness of nostalgia settles in.

Each city has its magic, and I think that things sometimes aren't appreciated fully until they are gone. I lived in Richmond, VA for 6 years before finally making it to New York; even though I was itching to get out of that town where time stands still, I find myself thinking about it often. Walking on the rocks of the James River, becoming an expert in parallel parking, seeing the same people ALL the TIME at coffee shops, the great little music scene, the lazy porch hangouts during balmy summer nights.

Perhaps when you move onto the next place, you'll be writing a similar post comparing Helsinki to Shanghai, or something ^_^ And if you ever return to this fair little city, you know it'll welcome you with open arms.

Sitting on the sidewalk, waiting for friends to walk by as I read a book.

OR

Playing a game of basketball with a handful of friends, half court, then bumping into a new crowd of other players of equal or greater skill, ending up in a sweaty 90 minute 5 on 5 full court game.

OR

Living on craigslist.org to find something new to do.

Oh how I miss NY.
