I love this, but need to make a factual correction and a clarification. NORC is a demographic descriptor that recognizes that there is a significant concentration of seniors living in housing built originally for families. The programs that are organizied to help enable seniors to remain living in their own homes, even as they grow older and frailer are called "supportive service programs" or SSPs. Qualifying demographically only makes you eligible to compete when there are requests for proposals. There has been no new city or state funding for almost 3 years, and the federal stream ($5 million nation-wide)is committed for the next 2 years.

Just to add to the chorus: what a terrific piece. Fresh, original analysis. Design/architectural thinking applied to actual social dynamics in actual places rather than self-important provocations. Statistical data presented in a highly condensed, focused way. Clear, straightforward writing. And skillful graphics in the service of engaging, rather than dazzling, the readership. And I learned something. Please keep it up!

My husband and I bought in Seward Park several years ago and one of the things that impressed us most was the age diversity. It seemed like a perfect place to grow old. We've come to know a number of families with several generations living is differnet apartments in the complex. NORC's are a true "Village".

Thanks for the article and I look forward to the book.

Great article on the NORC concept and the benefits to seniors for living in one. The NORC is a definite, viable alternative to the traditional assisted living and CCRC facility, especially for those who may not have the income to afford assisted living. I am fininsing writing a book on senior housing choices designed for boomers and seniors and will be devoting as much space to NORC's as to other types of living accommodations. It appears to be gaining ground in popularity.

Fantastic use of tools of architectural representation to tell a social story about people and buildings. Hooray!
