For the past thirty years, the Architectural League has annually selected eight individuals or firms from the US, Canada, and Mexico as Emerging Voices: design practitioners with distinct design voices and the potential to influence the disciplines of architecture, landscape design, and urbanism. Past winners have included many names familiar to the Omnibus readership, including Interboro PartnersWXY Architecture + Urban DesignSCAPE / Landscape Architecture, and dlandstudio, among many others.

The winners of this year’s juried portfolio competition are The LivingSurfacedesign, Inc.SITU StudioAnts of the PrairieEstudio Macías PeredoRael San Fratello; TALLER |MauricioRocha+GabrielaCarrillo|; and Williamson Chong Architects.

David Benjamin of The Living, also this year’s winner of MoMA PS1’s Young Architects Program, may be recognizable to regular Omnibus readers: he has collaborated on a public interface to water quality and aquatic life of urban rivers for the League’s Toward the Sentient City exhibition, participated in the Situated Technologies symposium, and weighed in on the question of what New York City needs to do, in terms of architecture and planning, to sustain itself as a world capital.

The principals of SITU Studio, a design, fabrication, and research firm based in Brooklyn, sat down with us in 2011 to discuss public space, architectural interventions, and the gray area they inhabit between many disciplines. Most recently, some of you may also have experienced their environment at the League’s Beaux Arts Ball 2013: -ism, which you can relive in video highlights of the evening.

Every Thursday this month, a pair of Emerging Voices will present their work. See below for date and ticket information for the lectures, and check back on the League site in the coming months for original interviews, videos of the lectures, and expanded material on their recent projects.
