As the one-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy approaches, New York City and the larger region continue to grapple with the effects of the storm and the implications of a future of rising sea levels and extreme weather. The city continues to contend with the challenges of strengthening infrastructure and rebuilding communities while navigating the complex and sometimes conflicting plans and priorities for recovery. On Monday, October 28th, at 6:30pm, The Museum of the City of New York, The Architectural League, and The American Society of Landscape Architects will host a discussion among four people at the forefront of both thought and action to make the city more resilient. The panel, “New York Perspectives on Resilience,” will ask the question: how can New Yorkers begin to align their politics, finances, and designs to reduce the risk from future storms? Moderated by Alexandros Washburn, author of The Nature of Urban DesignA New York Perspective on Resilience (an excerpt of which was recently published on Places) and New York’s chief urban designer, the discussion will feature Marc Ricks, a former chief of staff to Deputy Mayor Daniel Doctoroff, who left the private sector to return to the Bloomberg Administration to help lead the Special Initiative for Rebuilding and Resiliency; architect Thaddeus Pawlowski, who began his career creating computer models of hurricane strikes and has recently worked at New York’s Housing Recovery Office; and Dr. Nancy Kete, Managing Director of the Rockefeller Foundation, who develops strategies and practices for infusing resilience thinking throughout the foundation’s work.
